My name is Ian Mackenzie, and I started Alliance Therapies because I wanted others to experience the same benefits that I've experienced with CBH. A few years ago I went through a pretty rough time with my business (thanks in no small part to the global financial meltdown of 2008) and it was an incredibly stressful period in my life. The pressure became too much and  I struggled to cope. I knew I wasn't dealing with it very well and thankfully, decided to do something about it. A friend recommended CBH to me and although sceptical at first, the 'evidence based' approach of CBH appealed to me. Suffice to say that I found the treatment very helpful as it allowed me to manage my problems. Of course, CBH wasn't going to save my business, but it did help me to accept the situation I was in. I became fascinated with the logic and processes involved in CBH and wanted to learn more. I did my research and subsequently signed up to the only course approved by the British Psychological Society, 'The Diploma in clinical, evidence based Hypnotherapy' offered by the UK college of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy. Fast forward a couple of years and I'm pleased to say I duly passed the course and gained my Diploma. 

Being qualified to practise CBH, my focus is now to help individuals heal, energize, and become aware of their inner strengths. I achieve this by providing a safe space to talk, without judgement, I listen to your concerns and customize  a treatment plan that works for you. What is CBH?

 Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy is a Hybrid treatment program that incorporates a variety of therapeutic techniques. There are elements of traditional Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Hypnosis, Mental Imagery and Visualisation work. These procedures have been proven to be both safe and effective in reducing, or eliminating completely, many of the issues  that can be experienced in today’s busy society.

Is CBH right for me?

 As people, we are all individuals, so it makes sense that we will all respond differently to any treatments received. Therefore, having a variety of options allows the CBH therapist tremendous flexibility within treatment and this greatly enhances the likelihood of a successful outcome.

Stress

Stress is becoming more and more prominent in today’s society - why? Because in the busy world we live in we are constantly bombarded with activities and information, time restraints, work, money, family pressures and more; all of which can cause stress. Sometimes our brains and bodies need a break in order to relax and recalibrate; mindfulness and relaxation techniques and wonderful at doing just that. Reducing your level of stress is very important as it can often be the root cause of other problems.

Anxiety

Public speaking, sports or performance anxieties, fears and phobias; these are just a few of the issues that can lead to worry, rumination, panic or avoidance (fight or flight). From general to acute issues, the majority of these problems are caused by a perceived lack of confidence or ability. 

The combination of techniques used in CBH specifically targets these areas, challenging your fears and boosting your self confidence to allow you to make and achieve permanent and lasting positive changes to your life.

Smoking Cessation

Everyone knows that smoking is expensive and not exactly good for your health. In fact, about 79% of all adult smokers would like to quit if they could (Gallup poll) but of course, you have to be motivated to stop smoking. The CBH approach incorporates a variety of different elements to boost that motivation, to question and then eliminate your desire to smoke. It stands to reason that you can only have a craving for something if you have a desire for it, so if you remove the desire you take away the craving, allowing you to stop completely, easily and forever. 

Weight Control

Many of us have experienced the misery of dieting on a regular basis. Yo-yoing between trying the latest fad diet and maybe losing a bit of weight, only to see it pile on again as soon as you return to your regular eating habits. Using a variety of techniques, Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy addresses the root cause of the problem, because it is only when we recognise and understand why someone is over or under eating that we can progress to change those eating habits and bring about lasting change.

Insomnia

Around a third of people experience insomnia at some time or other, and quite often, if you are stressed or worried about something then your sleep will be the first thing to suffer. Poor sleep can be very frustrating and lead many to turn to sleeping tablets to resolve the problem; In the long term, the use of these becomes less effective and can lead to addiction. Most poor sleepers have, over time, developed poor sleeping habits. CBH challenges those habits and replaces them with new positive ones.

Other areas where Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy has been proved to be highly effective is in control of certain addictions, the area of Pain relief and the management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. What is Hypnosis?

Clinical Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation with focused attention on positive suggestions. If you think of Hypnosis as a situation where you're deeply focused on something, like when you're reading a good book, or watching a movie, or driving  on a motorway, you may recall that you can lose track of time, or not be fully aware of where you are? This feeling is a 'Hypnotic state' and we all enter 'Hypnotic states' many times a day, without even realising it.

Is it safe and does it work?

Yes, Hypnotherapy has been proved to be a safe and effective treatment, for many conditions, by organisations such as the British Medical Association (BMA) and the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) and by adding elements of CBT, NLP and mindfulness to hypnosis we can further increase the efficacy of treatment.

Can anyone be Hypnotised?

Yes, although you have to want to be Hypnotised. You can't be Hypnotised against your will and you can't get stuck in Hypnosis. We will be working collaboratively, but you will be in control and fully aware of what's going on.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on the issues raised, but usually 3 or 4 sessions are sufficient to bring about lasting change. After the initial assessment, we will work together to agree a program of treatment, targeted specifically to your needs, including costs and likely length of treatment required.
